For close to 3 years I have been using AT&T as my mobile provider. While their network was great and reliable. Their pricing is a bit much paying $80/m. In this day and age any little savings helps. When I set out to look for a new provider. I didn’t want to just use the general providers out there as in the long run it didn’t seem like much of a savings long term.

After a little bit of Googling I stumbled upon Mint Mobile. I have never heard of this company before and after some more digging it appears as if this company is partially owned by Ryan Reynolds.

These are their plans as of July 1st, 2023 (2023-07-01):

I had a short time slot to switch providers. Unfortunately the new SIMCard wasn’t able to arrive until later the week and my AT&T plan was set to renew sooner. So in order for me to keep my number and save. I had my number from AT&T ported over to Google Voice. This process for whatever reason took close to 24 hours.

There is a fee of $20 to port your number to Google Voice. It’s important that you setup a Google Payments & subscriptions prior to initiating the port to Google Voice. Because, you will need a Zip Code as authentication.

Once I received the SIMCard from Mint Mobile I then had to port the number away from Google Voice. You must now unlock your number. If you are porting a free number you received from Google Voice, there is a $3 charge to unlock the number. If you ported your number to Google Voice from another provider as I did then this is free.

When Mint Mobile asks for your ID and PIN to start porting your old number over. This is your Google Voice phone number or your original phone number. It’s important that you include the area code as well. Your ID and PIN would be 5555555555 if your phone number is 555-555-5555.

Porting the number away from Google Voice to Mint Mobile only took about 7-8 minutes. Maybe even sooner. The transition was flawless.
